I keep meaning to post by email from work, but I've actually had plenty of work to do and being a conscientious kind of lass I've been getting on with that instead. Otherwise my in-tray will overflow and I'll drown.

Our mad black kitten gets madder everyday. I really think she might have a learning disability. I've had kittens before, but this one is the daftest by a mile. I just discovered she has chewed half way through my camera usb cable. Dunno if the cable will work now. Bah! Kitten hasn't quite learned how to drink from a bowl and is just as likely to tip it over the floor and lick the floor, and she prefers to squat next to the litter tray than in it, even when I've just cleaned it out.

I've been looking at the world and despairing, to the point where I really don't want to look. And I'm not talking about England's footballing exploits. As Naomi Klein points out in today's Guardian, the US and its corporate cronies continues to ransack Iraq. Klein tells us that "US occupation powers have been unabashed in their efforts to steal money that is supposed to aid a war-ravaged people. The state department has taken $184m earmarked for drinking water projects and moved it to the budget for the lavish new US embassy in Saddam Hussein's former palace." I'm disgusted, though not at all surprised. And today George is patting himself on the back in Ireland and promising help and support to the Iraqi people. Bollocks George.

Closer to home, my fridge decided a couple of weeks ago that it was fed up with being a fridge and would much rather be a freezer. Its been running at -6 ever since. So we've been getting by on minimal supplies kept in the camping cool-box with a couple of ice packs. I couldn't afford to buy a new fridge straight away having laid out mucho money on new windows and having the pointing done on the back of the house, and then Fungus Kitten had the cheek to have a birthday too! Anyway, our time of deprivation is coming to an end and the new fridge is being delivered on Monday. I know my hardships are infinitesimal in comparison with the nightmares going on around the world, and I do count my blessings, but nonetheless it will be rather nice to be able to have a cold beer again.

Feeling too miserable to blog. Misery isn't very entertaining so I'll be back when I've cheered up a bit.

I've been in the 17th century all week, hence no blogging. I'm reading An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears. It is truly excellent! I've really resented having to go to work and having to put it away. Its a murder mystery, told in 4 different narratives. Each of the narrators has his own agenda, their lives intersecting around the murder of an Oxford academic. Pears brilliantly evokes 17th century Oxford - I can smell and taste it, feel the chill of the damp and draughty buidings.I haven't finished it yet, so shall soon be curling up on the sofa again for some more time travelling.
